Rules

This contest consists of 5 puzzles. One puzzle will be published per day beginning on Monday 10/14 in the Daily Illini. The puzzles will appear on the surface to be advertisements for the Reflections/Projections conference. The puzzles for any given day will be available for download from this website beginning at 10AM on the day the puzzle was released.

Hints and updates will be distributed through the website, and through the Puzzlehack Mailinglist. If you are competeing we suggest that you join the list so you can keep up to date with the contest.

The grand prizes for this contest are hidden on the University of Illinois campus. Solving the 5th puzzle will reveal the location of the grand prize.

Smaller prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons to submit the correct answer to any given days puzzle.

Grand Prizes (you will need to solve all 5 puzzles to find the location):

  • 1st location contains: An XBOX Suite (includes xbox, games, controllers)
  • 2nd location contains: An XBOX
  • 3rd location contains: Software/Games Package

Daily prizes (awarded to the first 3 people to submit the correct answers each day):

  • 1st to submit each day: Your pick from 1st place software prizes (including XBOX games)
  • 2nd to submit each day: Your pick from 2nd place software prizes
  • 3rd to submit each day: Your pick from 3rd place software prizes

Additional Information:

  1. Puzzle solutions should be submitted to answers@puzzlehack.org. Please include the puzzle number (1-5) in the subject, and the answer to the puzzle in the e-mail body. For more information, see the contact section.
  2. There are no deadlines for solving the puzzles. Prizes are awarded to the first 3 groups or individuals to solve the puzzles each day and the first 3 groups or individuals to find where the grand prizes have been hidden.
  3. For daily prizes, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place are determined by the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd groups or individuals to submit e-mails containing the correct answer for any given puzzle to answers@puzzlehack.org.
  4. For the grand prizes, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place are determined by the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd groups or individuals to find the hidden prizes.
  5. You do not have to correctly submit answers to the first 4 puzzles in order to be eligable for the grand prizes. You just have to find the grand prize location before anyone else.
  6. If you are the first person to submit the correct answer to a puzzle, your name will be highlighted on the Puzzlehack website.
  7. There are mechanisms built into the puzzles that will regulate that you actually solve the 5th puzzle to win the contest. If you find the grand prizes without legitimately solving the 5th puzzle, we will know, and you will not win a grand prize.
  8. Group work is allowed and is unregulated. However each location contains only 1 prize, so if you work in a group, you will have to figure out how to split your prize.
  9. Puzzles may require information from other puzzles to solve. Puzzles may also require information from the Internet or another information source to solve.
  10. We will release solutions to all of the puzzles on Friday 10/18 at 10:00PM at the Puzzlehack roundup in 1320 DCL. They will then be released to the Puzzlehack website. We will not release the solutions unless all 3 locations have been found.
  11. Hints may be released as appropriate over the course of each puzzleday. Releases will happen if we find people are having significant difficulty with part or parts of a given puzzle.
  12. You may check your answers to any puzzle at any time by sending an e-mail to answers@puzzlehack.org with the puzzle number in the subject line, and your answer as the only contents of the body.
  13. These rules are subject to change up until the first puzzle is released.

Further questions can be directed to questions@puzzlehack.org.
